Chapter 23

Greta’s house was still packed with visitors who had been in for the wedding. Some sneered at me as I waited in the living room for Greta after I was let in by one of the younger family members. I remembered her from one of the orders I’d taken last week. She’d seemed pleasant. I wondered if she cared that Chelsea was a merrow. Did she even know of the history between their families?

Greta shuffled into the room. “Joanie? This is a surprise. What are you doing here?”

She appeared genuine, as if she didn’t know why I’d be coming to see her. I’d figured Bruce was mostly a one-man show fueling the lingering tensions between the two families, but would he have hidden his misdeeds from one of his oldest friends?

My gaze darted around all the people still in the room before settling back on her. “I’m hoping you can help me track someone down.”

“Come, come sit and tell me what’s going on.” She must have noticed then the looks some of the others were giving me as we passed. “Scram, all of you. Joanie’s a friend, and as long as you’re in my house, you’ll show her some respect.”

She ushered me to the couch, rolling her eyes. “This grudge is as strong as I’ve ever seen it. And I thought trolls were hardheaded.”

“About that. I’m hoping to find Bruce.”

“What did he do now? Oh, but first, can I offer you some tea?”

Usually, I would have agreed to some, but I had to get my information and leave. “No, but thank you. I assume you know about the cookie orders?”

She smiled. “Considering how many I have frozen right now as a result, yes. Once I found out, I wasn’t going to let them throw away the non-salty ones.”

They were going to throw out most of the cookies? What a waste that would have been. As annoyed as that made me, I wasn’t about to take it out on Greta.

“Well, instead of the overwhelming number of orders coming in, I now have the opposite problem.” I filled her in my lack of business these last two days and how Zeke was now trying to bake sweets.

“Oh, this is going too far now. Giving you a bunch of orders is one thing—it’s at least more money in your pocket even if it leaves you exhausted. It’s another thing entirely for him to be taking business away from you. He might not like whose side you’re on, but you’re good for the town. No one can argue against that.”

“I’m not on anyone’s side.”

She sighed hard. “He doesn’t see it that way, dear. He sees you as dredging up a past for someone he doesn’t think deserves it.”

“Well, then I’m just going to have to convince him that he’s wrong.”

Greta belted out a laugh. “Good luck with that.” She got up and walked out of the room. Returning a few moments later, she held a slip of paper out to me. “Here’s his address.
